This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
