Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
